CODE FOR SELF DISCIPLINE IN THE SCINDIA SCHOOL

 

PREAMBLE

The Scindia School envisions to be a vibrant community of compassionate learners and thinkers for whom excellence is a credo.

In a nurturing, stimulating, safe and caring environment, students are able to challenge themselves with zeal and commitment, thereby attaining standards of distinction in whatever they undertake. In order to ensure that students attain their goals, there needs to be a common code, which is clearly understood and practised by all members of the community.

The ideal state of discipline is self-regulation. When we do the right things without being watched, we are considered to be disciplined. Rules and codes are meant to provide a frame of reference for socially accepted behaviour. Clarity of expectations promotes harmonious living wherein we can lead responsible, fulfilled lives and become contributory members of society.

CODE OF CONDUCT

 

VALUES AND PRINCIPLES:

This code has been drawn with the following Values and Principles on which the foundation of the School stands:

The Scindia School is a fully residential, boys' school. English is the medium of instruction.

The Vision of the School is to be "the pre-eminent centre of transformative learning in the country producing future leaders with a global perspective and an Indian ethos."

The Values on which the code of conduct has been drawn up are:

1. Self-monitoring, Self- regulation and Self-responsibility
2. Respect, Discipline, Humility, Responsible (towards environment, community), Courage, Trust, Leadership, Innovation

Specific aims and objectives of The Scindia School's values, ethics and ethos are to:

1. Promote curiosity, independence of thought, life-long learning and fearlessness to explore intellectual realms
2. Growth towards self-discipline and self-awareness. Growth towards an internalized ethical code
3. Courtesy towards all staff and workers, at all times. Development of social sensitivity and responsibility towards the environment
4. Ensuring a safe and healthy community

The basic principle of the School is respect for all individuals, be it staff, teachers, students, juniors or seniors. Hence violence of any kind is unacceptable.

Purpose

1. To provide a list of well-defined expectations from the community
2. To provide a list of consequences for deviation from the listed expectations

Chapter 1: Fundamental Expectations in all Settings

 

1. Language
The language of communication should be English. Speak softly and politely without using abusive or derogatory words
2. Respect
Respect the ethos of the school, adults, peers and school property. Respect other’s personal space and views. Vandalising school property, writing graffiti or damaging library books is unacceptable
3. Responsible
Be responsible for your own learning and setting high standards of behaviour. Learn to accept responsibility and bring all the materials needed for the activity you will be participating in
4. Punctuality
Be on time for all school programmes and activities
5. Dress code
Wear appropriate uniform as per the occasion prescribed by the school
6. Cleanliness
Maintain personal hygiene, cleanliness and abstain from littering. Respect the environment
7. Attendance
It is mandatory to get your attendance marked at all the venues/ activities you are expected to be present
8. School Campus
Students, at all times, are expected to stay within the designated school campus. Moving out of designated School Campus puts a student in an unsecured environment. They are advised not to venture out even for fun as it may be considered by some. Breaking bounds is an offence and will invite consequences

Morning Fitness Programme

1. Kick starts a new day and gets you physically active and ready for a promising day ahead

Expectations

1. Mandatory participation by students of all classes
2. Follow the instructions of the coach

Expected DRESS CODE

A uniform dress code reinforces in students, a pride in their own appearance and develops mutual respect among students by minimizing visible evidence of economic or social differences. The student dress code readily identifies students of the school, distinguishing them from outsiders and thus enhances their safety.

DRESS CODE

Summer- White shirt and grey shorts for Classes VI to X. White shirt and grey trousers for Classes XI and XII. Grey socks and black shoes for all. White shirt and white shorts/trousers are worn on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Evening Uniform - White Kurta and pyjama with floaters.

Winter- White Shirts, grey woollen trousers, School tie, navy-blue School blazer with School monogram, grey socks and black shoes.
Evening Uniform - School trousers and blazers/School sweat shirts.

Sikh boys - Blue turban from Class X onwards and white patka for Classes VI to IX.

BROAD GUIDELINES:

The following is agreed to regarding the Dress Code at The Scindia School:

1. Shirt and T-shirt should be tucked in at all times
2. Hair should be well-cut and presentable
3. School Uniform to be worn when a student is arriving to School or Departing from School with Parents
4. When travelling by School party for vacation or going to participation in any outstation event, School Games T Shirt and School Lower/ Blue Jeans and Sports Shoes should be worn
5. On Sundays, students can wear T-shirts/ Sweat Shirt acquired during school events like Round Square, IPSC Service Project etc

Chapter 2: Expectation in Academic Block

Assembly
The School Assembly is a formal occasion and brings together the whole school community to share information, provides a venue for important announcements, and is a platform to communicate social, moral, spiritual, and cultural concepts.
Expectations

1. Always maintain silence with eyes on the speaker
2. Keep your hands and feet to yourself
3. Show appreciation for the performances
4. Move out quietly for the class teacher’s period at the end of the Assembly

Academics
Academics is an integral part of Education and is necessary for holistic development. We learn to realise our potential and the knowledge we gain is an asset, which enables us to mix with people and hold meaningful/enriching conversations.
Expectations

1. Follow classroom rules
2. Come prepared for learning
3. Be a good listener
4. Focus on the task
5. Meet deadlines for submission of assignments

Academic Integrity
All human relationships are based on mutual trust. Using dishonest means is not only unfair to the students who have worked hard but the students who use unfair means to pass the examination will never know their strengths and weaknesses.
Expectations

1. Not indulging in the act of destroying fellow student’s work both academic and non-academic
2. Using unfair means during examination is unacceptable. The person found copying and the one aiding it, both will be held responsible
3. Using unfair means for coursework such as plagiarism or instructing juniors to finish one’s tasks will not be accepted

Chapter 3: Expectation After Academic Hours

Meals
A balanced diet provides the body with all the essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals required to maintain cells, tissues and organs as well as to function correctly.  A diet that is lacking in nutrients can lead to many different health problems ranging from tiredness and lack of energy to serious problems in growth and development.
Expectations

1. Follow basic Table Manners and Etiquette
2. Maintain queues while taking food and avoid pushing
3. Do not waste food and water
4. Respect the Dining Hall Staff and be courteous to them
5. Do not wash hands in the drinking water area
6. Nothing should be carried away from the Dining Hall
7. Make healthy food choices

Sports and Games
Games are necessary for a healthy body, developing team spirit and self-discipline.
Expectations

1. Practice sportsmanship
2. Using Safety Gear is compulsory during practice and matches
3. Follow the instructions of Coach/ Sports Captain
4. Use appropriate language
5. Return the Sports equipment to its proper place

Astachal
Introspection allows you to notice the negative as well as positive patterns in your life and helps one face his/her fears. It provides a meaningful and relaxing interlude to a hectic day.
Expectations

1. Maintain the spirit and sanctity of the Astachal
2. Stay silent
3. Listen quietly
4. Look within

Representing School or hosting Inter-school events
Inter-school events are a great means of showcasing talent and are a great opportunity to learn
Expectations

1. Exhibit positive behaviour at all times & respect the rules of the host school
2. Any conduct which endangers reputation, safety or ethics of the school or well-being of teachers/ fellow students will invite maximum penalty
3. Be responsible towards the duties allotted and not forsake them mid-way
4. Be courteous, dignified, and maintain decorum at all times; keeping the pride of the School intact
5. Be an ambassador of the school

Co-Curricular
The importance of co-curricular activities is crucial to building up of self-esteem, develop responsibility and improve inter-personal skills. It provides an escape from the monotony and is an opportunity to work on one’s interests.
Expectations

1. Give your personal best
2. Appreciate the work of others
3. Carry out the responsibility assigned with sincerity and diligence

 

Chapter 4

Houses
Houses are a ‘home away from home’ for Scindians, The stone façade of houses are misleading. They house a happy group of boisterous kids. Life in the House translates into ‘live for the House’.
Expectations

1. Follow house rules
2. Housemaster has free access to all spaces in the house
3. Rooms are not to be locked
4. Inappropriate posters are not allowed
5. Prep should be meaningful and productive
6. Any permissible Electronic Gadget* and Cash should be registered/submitted to the House Masters on arrival in School

Permissible Electronic Gadgets.

1. The Scindia School allows possession of audio 'iPods', discmans, MP3 players, Digital cameras for students of grade VIII-IX. However, these items must be registered with the House parent, on arrival at the School. These may be used only in the Houses at designated times. Any violation of these rules will attract penalties and the items will be confiscated. School also allows Net Books for academic use (Refer to IT Policy)
2. School does not take responsibility for any such items which may be misplaced or stolen

Monetary Transactions

1. Students are not allowed to have money in their possession. They must hand over any cash that they may have, to the Houseparent in a sealed envelope, with their name and amount written on it. Any other money will be considered illegal and will be confiscated and deposited in the School’s Social Service Account
2. The School allows limit for coupons for the weekly canteen, specified by the School and students will have to adhere to this limit. These coupons are non- transferable. Students are not permitted to sell personal belongings. Buying items from shops located at the Fort or using any other means to procure them is not permitted

 

Chapter 5

Expectations & Behaviour in other Areas
Corridor and Stairs

1. Walk quietly in an orderly fashion
2. Stay to your left
3. Do not push or jostle for space

Boarding the Bus

1. Board and alight in an orderly manner
2. Obey the bus driver
3. Remain seated and do not project any body parts outside the bus
4. Playing, shouting or moving in a running bus is prohibited

Cafeteria

1. Queue up, maintain order
2. Maintain cleanliness around Cafeteria. Throw the waste in dustbins available around
3. Monetary transaction is strictly not permitted

Travel/Field trips

1. Follow instructions of the Teacher Escort and maintain a dignified behaviour
2. Do not exhibit any conduct which endangers reputation, safety or ethics of the school or well-being of teachers/ fellow students
3. Do not take help from outsiders
4. Stay safe and alert

Speciality Rooms (e.g.Labs, Library, Music Room etc.)

1. Keep the materials you use at their appropriate place after use
2. Respect the equipment and books
3. Respect procedures and follow the safety rules
4. Follow safety protocols laid out in respective Speciality rooms

Emergency Procedures
Emergency procedures are in place to ensure the safety of the students during various emergency situations such as fire or injury.

1. Raise alarm, inform
2. Immediately inform the first Teacher/School Employee you meet
3. Participate in mock drills

 

Chapter 6

IT Usage Policy Network Storage & Student Netbook Computer Policy
Each student from class IX onward is provided a Netbook by the School or can bring it from home, strictly as per machine specifications given by IT Department. School also provides Network Storage to students. It provides Wi-fi facility in each House. Network storage areas are treated like school lockers. They are to be respected as personal individual spaces, yet are open to inspection by the school authorities.
Expectation:

1. Each student has a Unique Login Id and Password. Using or stealing other’s Login Id or stealing of Password is a punishable crime
2. When in the Computer Lab, in case of any problem, approach the teacher concerned or the instructor for help. Interchanging/Replacement of hardware, using Pen drive or Hard disk or any other computer accessories is not allowed
3. Students should NOT attempt to install software or hardware or change the system configuration including network settings without prior consultation with the Dean of ICT. An action otherwise may lead to confiscation of the Netbook
4. Any formatting done to the Netbook may lead to confiscation
5. Provision of various content like e-books, movies, music, quizzes etc. shall be done by the administration
6. Existence of inappropriate content on the netbook may lead to confiscation
7. Students are expected to protect school Netbooks from damage and theft
8. Students will be held personally responsible for any problems caused by their negligence as deemed fit by the school’s administration
9. Do not leave a Netbook in unlocked cupboards and desks. Never leave it in plain sight
10. Be aware of the damage extreme temperatures can cause to computers
11. Carry your Netbook in a non-descript carrying case or bag when traveling
12. Always leave classrooms with your notebook
13. Lock the Netbook in your charging units during off-hours or when not in use
14. More details of Do’s and Don’ts are handed over to students once they join the School

 

Chapter 7

CONSEQUENCES:
The Scindia School follows the Positive Discipline model that focuses on the positive points of behaviour and corrective discipline, based on the idea that there are no bad children, just good and bad behavior. You can teach and reinforce the good behaviour while minimizing the bad behaviour. In enforcing positive discipline, we aim to help students learn how to handle situations more appropriately while reflecting on their misdemeanor. The offences are marked under different levels. Accordingly, consequences are faced. Some of the consequences are stated below. Following is the list of consequences applicable to the kind of deviance shown in order of its severity:

1. A verbal reprimand
2. Extra work
3. Loss of privileges
4. Writing a self-reflecting essay of about 500 words
5. No night outs
6. Holiday detention
7. Signing behavior contract
8. School based community service such as picking up litter or weeding school grounds; tidying a classroom; helping clear up the Dining Hall after meal times; or removing graffiti
9. Call parents
10. Suspension for 15 days to 3 months
11. Expulsion

  Details of Level of Offences along with corresponding consequences is at discretion of relevant committee. It is available with House Parents.
